A process for the manufacture of a monoaryl-substituted ethylenediamine comprises N- acylating ethanolamine, e.g. by reaction with an ester or anhydride of an aliphatic carboxylic acid, e.g. methyl or ethyl acetate or acetic anhydride, esterifying the resulting acylaminoethanol to form the corresponding acylaminoethyl chloride, e.g. by treating with thionyl chloride, reacting the latter with an aromatic amine, e.g. a primary aromatic amine at a temperature of 80-200‹ C. or a secondary aromatic amine at a temperature within range of room temperature to 150‹ C., the amino group of which contains at least one hydrogen atom, and hydrolysing the hydrochloride of the resulting N-aryl-N<SP>1</SP>-acyl-ethyl ethylene-diamine e.g. by treatment with alkali. Many primary and secondary aromatic amines are specified. In an example ethanolamine is heated under reflux with methyl acetate to produce acetamino-ethanol to which is added thionyl chloride to produce N-(2-chloroethyl)-acetamide which is then reacted with aniline to produce N-phenyl-ethylene diamine.
