Abstract
1,050,154. Stringed musical instruments. ORMSTON BURNS Ltd. Dec. 5, 1962 [Dec. 6. 1961], No. 43736/61. Heading G5J. A bridge of a stringed musical instrument is mounted on rollers or on ball races so that it moves freely in the longitudinal direction of the strings as tension varies. In a guitar, the bridgeassembly 309 comprises an individual bridge 310 to 315 for each string and is combined with a tremolo device. A framework comprising side members 329, 330 is secured to the body of the instrument and carries four ball races on which the bridge assembly runs. Only two of the races 335, 336 are shown in Fig. 4. The strings run from the bridges under a rod 321 and are anchored to a spindle 308 which is turned by handle 353 to control the tension. Springs:346, 347 attached to a bar 348 normally balance the torque exerted on the spindle 308 by the strings. An adjustment screw 349 links the bar 348 to a crosspiece 331 on the framework. Each individual bridge can be adjusted in the direction of the strings by a screw 327 and perpendicular to the strings by screws 328.
