A p-hydroxyalkoxybenzoic acid is prepared by reacting 1 mole of p-hydroxybenzoic acid with 1-1À05 mole of alkali metal hydroxide and 1À6-1À8 moles of alkylene oxide, at 75- 110‹ C. In examples, the p-substituent is 2- hydroxyethoxy 2 - hydroxypropoxy or 2 - hydroxybutoxy; 2-hydroxy-2-phenylethoxy and 2-hydroxycyclohexyloxy are also mentioned.
