The invention comprises 1,1,4,4-tetramethylolcyclohexene of the formula It may be prepared by reacting cyclohexanedial-1,4 with formaldehyde in an aqueous alkaline medium at a pH not exceeding 12. The alkaline medium may be a solution of an alkali metal hydroxide or an alkaline earth metal hydroxide. The cyclohexane-dial-1,4 used as starting material may be prepared by catalytically dehydrogenating bis-methylol-cyclohexane-1,4 at 300-600‹ C. in the presence of oxygen.
