Abstract

1,049,527. Pipe connections. GIRLING Ltd. July 8, 1963 [July 18, 1962; Aug. 9, 1962], Nos. 27557/62 and 30497/62. Heading F2G. Means for making a connection between a pipe 15 and the inlet manifold 10 of an internal combustion engine comprise a tubular coupling member 11 adapted to be inserted through a hole 13 in the manifold, a head or collar 12 carried by the coupling member at or adjacent its inner end and which abuts against the inner surface of the manifold and means engaging with the outer surface of the manifold for retaining the coupling in position. As shown in Fig. 1 the means engaging the outer surface of the manifold is an adaptor 14 which is screwed on to a spigot 17 of the coupling 11, and a resilient sealing washer 18 backed by a metal plate 19. When the adaptor is screwed home on the spigot it draws the head 12 into the wall of the manifold, which it deforms around the hole after compressing the resilient sealing washer 18. Instead of having an adaptor on to which the end of the pipe 15 fits, the coupling itself may be constructed so that it extends into the end of the pipe and the tightening may be done by a nut screwing on an external thread on the coupling. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the head or collar 26 carried by the coupling member 25 at or adjacent its inner end abuts against the outer surface of the manifold 10. The hole 28 in the manifold is entered by a short spigot 27 on the coupling member. The head 26 is tightened against the manifold, a resilient sealing washer 34 being interposed, by a clip. As shown in Fig. 3 the coupling member is fixed to one part of the clip by the engagement thereof in a groove 30 in the coupling member; alternatively, the connection may be by brazing.
