Abstract

The invention comprises (a) a cardio-active plant extract containing alkaloids of empirical formulae C26H44N2, C25H42N2 and C26H44N2O obtained by extraction from Buxus sempervirens L. with a water-immiscible organic solvent and an aqueous acid, followed by alkalinization of the aqueous phase, (b) the above alkaloids, obtained by chromatography of the extract, which contain a primary amino group and, in the third compound, a hydroxyl group, and (c) their acid addition salts, N-acylates, N,O-diacylates, and Schiff's bases formed by condensation with carbonyl compounds. The free alkaloids may be regenerated from these derivatives. The alkaloids of the invention, and the extract containing them, have cardio-tonic activity and may be used in pharmaceutical compositions in combination with a carrier, for example in forms suitable for oral, parenteral, topical or rectal administration.
