Abstract
1,049,081. Electromagnetic relays. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. March 19, 1965 [March 21, 1964], No. 11735/65. Heading H2B. A polarized relay has its permanent magnet forming part of a hollow sealed contact container. As shown the permanent magnet tube 2 is sealed by magnetically conductive, electrically insulating plugs 3 in which the contact reeds 1 are secured. The permanent magnet flux may be insufficient to operate the contacts against the inherent spring bias but sufficient to retain the contact closed after closure due to energization of a surrounding coil 6. With this arrangement the release is effected by current passing in the permanent magnet tube between terminals 4. Alternatively the permanent magnet flux may be sufficient to close the contacts in the absence of other flux so that the contacts are open only when current passes between terminals 4, the coil 6 being omitted in this case. A conducting coating 9 may be deposited on the inside of the tube and may be divided longitudinally if the lagging effect of the conductor encircling the contacts is undesirable (Fig. 4, nor shown).
