Abstract

1,048,405. Perforating apparatus. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. June 18, 1965 [June 26, 1964], No. 25821/65. Heading B4B. To facilitate simple quick changing of the perforator blades 16 of a cylinder type perforator, the blades are each mounted in a toolholder, comprising a pair of relatively movable jaws 18, 26 to clamp the perforator blade 16 between their inner faces. A double-acting pneumatic piston 24 is selectively operable to actuate self-locking means which co-operates with and moves the jaw 18 towards the other jaw 26. The self-locking means comprises a tapered bar 20 abutting and slidable over a face of the jaw 18. The piston 24 has a pistonrod integral with the tapered bar. Each of the toolholder units 14, Fig 1 (not shown), is housed in a rectangular slot 12 in the perforator cylinder 10 which co-operates with an anvil roller 13. Compression springs 28, Fig. 3, bear on the upper surface of the piston 24 to clamp the blade and press teeth 34 on the jaw 18 against the blade with a pre-loading force which permits preliminary adjustment of the blade. The ends of the cylinder 10 are sealed by end plates 44, 54, Fig. 2 (not shown), and gaskets 46, 56 and compressed air may be applied to a nozzle 40 to drive the teeth 34 into the blade and lock it. Air may be applied to a nozzle 42 to energize the piston and unlock the bar 20.
