Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide a horizontal-type index head which can reliably secure a work at an index position by making wedges enter and retreat from the gaps between the side plates of a combination structure and a holder in order to index and turn a work to various angle positions about a horizontal axis. CONSTITUTION:To turn a work on which machining in a given direction has been finished, a working medium is injected into each cylinder 16 to make an induction lever 11 move against the repulsion force of a spring 15 so that each wedge 7 is moved in the retreat direction by the partial pressure transmitted from a sloping surface 12. Then, by a driving means 6, a combination structure of a bottom plate 1 and side plates 2 is turned about a horizontal axis X to index together with the work by a given angle with respect to a holder 2. After that, the working medium pressures applied to the cylinders 16 are released to allow the repulsion forces of the springs 15 to make the wedges 7 to enter simultaneously for securing the combination structure at the turning position.
