Abstract

1,048,367. Protecting microfilm. NATIONAL CASH REGISTER CO. May 11, 1965 [June 1, 1964], No. 19856/65. Heading G2C. Microfilm is protected and contact printing thereof is prevented by coating a microfilm on which a plurality of microimages have been formed, said images having at least a 100:1 linear reduction and a resolution of at least 500 lines per millimetre, with (i) a uniform transparent coating not more than 25 microns thick made of a material capable of maintaining the optical fidelity of the images and making intimate and inseparable bonding contact between the emulsion and an outer layer, and (ii) a transparent protective outer layer at least 50 microns thick. The inner transparent coating may be based on polyvinyl acetate. The outer protective layer may be a laminate of an inner thermoplastic layer e.g. of polyethylene and an outer scratch-resistant layer e.g. of polyethylene terephthalate. A similar protective layer may be applied to the back of the microfilm and the two layers may overlap the microfilm and be joined to completely enclose it.
