Abstract
Raw lactam, produced by subjecting a cycloalkanoneoxime obtained by the photonitrosation of a cycloalkane, to Beckmann's reaction, is refined by treating with alkali in a liquid phase and subsequently or simultaneously hydrogenating in the presence of a catalyst. The lactam may thereafter be treated with an ion exchange agent. The alkali may be NaOH, KOH, Na2CO3 or K2CO3. The hydrogenation may be carried out in water, alcohol or benzene using Ni, Co, Pt or Pd based catalysts. Examples relate to the treatment of caprolactam, capryllactam and lauryllactam. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,002,424.
