Abstract

Soluble and fusible polymers of di-isopropenyl benzene are made by effecting the polymerization in the presence of an organolithium catalyst and (a) an oxy-alkylated monohydric mononuclear or polynuclear phenol and/or (b) an oxyalkylated polyhydric mononuclear or polynuclear phenol and/or (c) polyglycols of the general formula HO-CH2(CH2-O-CH2)n-CH2OH in which n is greater than 5, and which may be etherified or esterified. The polymerization may be started at a temperature greater than +10 DEG C. and continued at a temperature below +10 DEG C. The polymerization may be effected in the presence of other monomers such as styrene, alpha-methystyrene, 1-isopropyl-4-isopropenyl benzene, acenaphthylene, vinyl pyridene methacrylic acid esters, acrylonitrile, or butadiene. The polymerization is preferably effected in a solvent such as benzene, toluene, heptane, xylene, or cumene. Exemplified monomers are p-di-isopropenylbenzene, m-di-isopropenyl benzene, mixtures of m and p-diisopropenyl benzene, a mixture of styrene and m-diisopropenylbenzene, a mixture of alphamethylstyrene and p-diisopropenylbenzene, a mixture of methylmethacrylate and p-diisopropenylbenzene, a mixture in which the acrylate is replaced by butadiene, a mixture in which butadiene is replaced by vinylpyridene, a mixture of p-diisopropenylbenzene and acenaphthylene, a mixture of p-diisopropenylbenzene and acrylonitrile, a mixture of p-diisopropenyl and 1-isopropyl-4-diisopropenylbenzene, and a mixture of diisopropenylbenzene and methylpentadiene. The polymers are recovered by treating the polymerizate with methanol containing acetic acid, washing the product with methanol, and drying under vacuum. The polymers may be converted to the hard, infusible state by heating if desired, in presence of a peroxide.
