Abstract

Random copolymers are obtained by contacting at least two monomeric materials selected from 1,3-butadiene, isoprene, piperylene and vinyl-substituted aromatic hydrocarbons with an organo-lithium polymerization initiator under polymerization conditions in a hydrocarbon diluent and in the presence of a polyether or a poly-tert-amine having at least 3 atoms other than C or H, a molecular weight of at least 130 and a boiling point of at least 150 DEG C. The organo-lithium initiator preferably has the formula RLix, where R is an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon radical having 1 to 20 carbon atoms and x is an integer from 1 to 4. The preferred polyethers have the formula <FORM:1066667/C3/1> and the preferred poly-tert-amines have the formula <FORM:1066667/C3/2> wherein each R is an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, each R1 is hydrogen or methyl and n is an integer of 2 to 6. Many other polyethers and poly-tert-amines are mentioned including polymers of ethers and oxides, and hexamethylene tetramine. An embodiment is illustrated in which after short-stopping a batch polymerization reaction, the polymerization mixture is passed into a flash separator and a portion of the solvent is flashed overhead together with any monomer that remains. This portion may be condensed and re-used. The material remaining in the separator is then treated by conventional processes to recover the rubbery copolymer. In the examples, styrene is copolyerized with 1,3-butadiene.
