Abstract

Polymers of alpha-methylstyrene are made by effecting the polymerization of the methyl-styrene alone or admixed with other ethylenically unsaturated monomers in the presence of an organometallic compound of lithium in an amount of 3 to 20 millimols per mol of monomer, and a polyglycol of the formula <FORM:1076897/C3/1> where n is an integer from 5 to 200, in an amount of from 0.5 to 2.0% by weight of the monomer or monomers. The polymerization temperature is from -60 DEG to +60 DEG C. The polyglycol may be etherified with a monohydric aliphatic or polyhydric aliphatic alcohol or an amino alcohol, or esterified with an organic acid. The polyglycols may be used in admixture with hydroxyalkylated phenols. The polymerization is generally effected in a hydrocarbon solvent. The other monomers may be styrene, vinylpyridine, 1 - isopropyl - 4 - isopropenylbenzene, methylmethacrylate, acrylonitrile, methylpentadiene, or butadiene.
