Abstract

1, 047, 952. Headboxes. BELOIT CORPORATION. July 18, 1963 [Oct. 5, 1962], No. 28532/63. Heading D2A. A headbox of a paper-making machine has a perforated plate 12 to form the stock into a plurality of jets which impinge on a row of rods 16 to generate turbulence in the stock. As shown there are a number of rows of rods 16-21, with the rods in each row nearer together and smaller in diameter as slice 15 is approached. Suitable dimensions of the spacing and diameter of the rods are given. The rods of any one row are mounted on a plate or plates which fit into grooves in the top and/or bottom of the headbox. The rods may be circular or polygonal in cross-section or may have have a groove in their upstream side (Fig. 12 not shown). Header 30 feeds the stock to plate 12 through parallel tubes 31. In Fig. 5 (not shown) the headbox is pressurized and the perforated plate is disposed below the rows of rods such that the stock jets issuing from the plate hit the back wall of the headbox and are deflected through 180 degrees to strike rods 16. Alternatively the perforated plate may be horizontal with optionally a row of horizontally extending rods above it in addition to rods 16-21. The top 14 of the headbox and slice plate 11b may be raised by cable 41. Top slice plate 65 is mounted on cross bars 66, 67 both pivoted at 60 and ajustable by cylinders 72, 63 respectively. A "slow purge" of heavy material or a "fast purge" of stock to be recirculated may be achieved through slot 53 and chamber 13.
