Abstract

1,047,941. Sawing; Cutting. J. D. BRUERE. July 24, 1963 [Feb. 26, 1963], No. 7761/63. Headings B4B and B5L. A saw for cutting carcases comprises a blade housing 13, Fig. 1, rigidly supported in relation to a motor 11 and removably locating a blade 14 which, when located in the housing, is capable of reciprocatory movement relative to the housing on operation of the motor, the means connecting the motor to the blade consisting of a rod 23 mounted for movement in a ball cage 28 having a plurality of balls 27 engaging the periphery of the rod. The motor 11 has a shaft 19, Fig. 2, supporting a flywheel 20 on which is an eccentricallymounted pin 21 connected by a rod 22 and pin to the rod 23 guided for axial movement in the housing 12, friction between the rod 23 and a sleeve in the housing being reduced by the balls in a cage 28. The end of the rod 23 is connected by a pin 29 to the blade 14 which reciprocates in the blade housing 13, a pin 32 in the housing engaging an open slot 31 in the blade which serves to guide the blade during reciprocation but permits it to be removed when the pin 29 is detached. Holes 30 are formed in the blade to dissipate heat and the end of the housing has a blunt end 39 and a thin shield 40, the blade not projecting beyond the end of the housing during use. The blade may have an undulating edge 34, Fig. 3, with tapered flutings 33 and channels 40. The slopes of the edge 34 are such that the blade makes a knife cut in one direction of movement and a sawlike or raking cut in the opposite direction. In an alternative embodiment, the blade housing is provided with fixed bevelled teeth which co-operate with bevelled teeth on the blade to produce a scissor-like cut. The saw may be provided with a hook 17 for engagement by a suspension system 18, and the motor has a pistol grip 15 with a trigger switch 16, a further handle 41 being mounted on the front of the motor.
