Abstract

A continuous process for the preparation of esters (gaseous at the esterification temperature) by the reaction of an acid and alcohol with granular esterification catalysts takes place in a horizontal or substantially horizontal tunnel oven at 150 DEG to 350 DEG C. One of the components has a melting point not below the esterification temperature and the other is gaseous at that temperature. Esters specified are monomethyl and monoethyl and dimethyl and diethyl terephthalates, isophthalates and adipates, and nonyl and decyl acetates, the monomethyl and trimethyl esters of trimesic acid, and trimellitic acid and tetraethyl ester of pyromellitic acid. Catalysts may be iron and aluminium and boron phosphates, zinc borate, sodium silicate, silica gel, and aluminium and lead oxide or active carbon treated with phosphoric acid. The solid reactant is introduced in powdered form, the gas is injected, and the product is fractionally condensed. Examples describe the preparation of dimethyl and diethyl terephthalates with silica gel catalysts.
