Abstract

Carbonyl compounds are prepared by the oxidation with oxygen of ethylenically unsaturated compounds wherein said oxidation is catalysed by an aqueous solution containing ions of a platinum group metal in a higher valency state and nitrite and nitrate ions. The solution preferably contains an organic liquid which has a dipole moment above 1.0, is resistant to oxidation, and is miscible with both water and the compound being oxidized. Reaction temperatures of 0 DEG to 150 DEG C. and pressures of 1 to 5 atmospheres are usually employed and it is preferred that nitrite ions, hydroxylamine, nitrogen dioxide, nitric oxide or ammonia be present in the initial aqueous solution to reduce the reaction induction period. It is also preferred to include nitric acid in the catalyst solution.
