[Also in Division B2] In a process for gradually reducing cereals to flour, the first stage A and succeeding stages B and C of the process Fig. 2, each consist of three steps namely: a first step, in which endosperm particles from purifiers Pu are fed into a roller-mill unit R having smooth rollers; a second step, in which reduced endosperm particles from the unit R are subjected to flake-disrupting treatment in a pin-mill K, wherein said particles become substantially airborne and loose-knit flaky particles are broken into smaller particles, but particles of germ and fibrous impurities remain substantially intact;. and a third step, in which particles from the second step are sieved, e.g. in a plansifter unit P comprising one half of a stack of sieves of a plansifter described in Specification 883,053, and separated into flour fractions F. Each pin-mill, Fig. 1, comprises an electric motor 1 having, on its drive shaft 2, a boss 3 carrying a rotor in the form of a pair of discs 4 and 5 connected by two concentric rings of pins 6. Endosperm particles from a roller-mill unit are fed through a shoot 9 and an annular opening 8 between the boss 3 and a flange 7 on the disc 5, into the space between the discs 4 and 5 and are flung outwards across the circular orbits of the pins. Disrupted and undisrupted particles leave the pin-mill through a lower outlet 10 in its casing.
