Abstract

1,046,318. Pulse radar. TELEFUNKEN PATENTVERWERTUNGS G.m.b.H. Oct. 5, 1965 [Oct. 17, 1964], No. 42128/65. Heading H4D. The invention relates to a pulse compression or '' chirp " radar, wherein the side lobe pulses (see Fig. 2c, not shown) obtained in practice from the output of the pulse compression filter are much reduced relative to the main control pulse. The transmitted pulse, as well as the echo pulses, is passed through the compression filter E and provides the waveform of Fig. 2c (not shown) having a central narrow pulse in-between two side pulses of appreciable amplitude. A switch S, controlled from the transmitter, is opened during the control pulse, so that only the side pulses pass to a rectifier device B and to an integrator device M to provide a control signal dependent on the average amplitude of the side pulses. The control signal causes an adjusting device OP to send signals on lines X 1- X n to the various stages in the filter E comprising a distortion correction filter, such that the amplitude of the side lobes is much reduced, and single echo pulses can be obtained at output Y 2 . Each stage in the correction filter may have its output fed to two summation devices via weighting potentiometers controlled by the signals on lines X 1 -X n . The outputs of the summation devices may be summed in quadrature to provide the output Y 2 . An artificial echo rather than the transmitted pulse may be used for determining the side pulse amplitudes.
