Abstract

1,071,854. Radar. MARCONI CO. Ltd. Feb. 28, 1964 [March 21, 1963], No. 11290/63. Heading H4D. Relates to a radar in which angular scanning in azimuth or elevation is effected by variation of transmitted frequency. According to the invention the receiver includes a first dispersive network producing simultaneously at its output signals corresponding to echo signals from targets at the same range, a range-selective time gate connected to the output of the first dispersive network, and a second dispersive network fed from that gate to give time spaced output signals; the latter may be displayed on a cathode-ray tube the time base of which corresponds to the maximum time over which output signals may be spaced. The time position of an output signal corresponds to target bearing (or elevation). In the embodiment the transmission is a ten microsecond pulse linearly frequency modulated over a rising range of 100 Mc/s. and the first dispersive network provides a differential delay falling linearly by ten microseconds over the same frequency range. Echo signals from all targets at the same range give rise to very short, e.g. 0À1 microsecond, signals simultaneously which after passing through the gate are separated in time by an amount proportional to bearing by the second dispersive network which has a delay/ frequency characteristic inverse to that of the first dispersive network.
