Abstract
1,046,028. Rolling mill. HENRY WIGGIN & CO. Ltd. July 9, 1963 [May 21, 1962], No. 19501/62. Heading B3M. [Also in Division F2] In a rolling mill having two backing rolls each surrounded by a set of planetary work rolls carried by a cage connected through gearing to cross-shafts 1, 2, an angularly-adjustable shaft coupling (see Division F2) permits adjustment of the relative rotational positions of the two cages if the sets of work rolls come out of alignment. The two cages are initially positively driven, but a clutch in the drive is disengaged once rolling has begun. The crossshafts 1, 2 drive through bevel gearing 7, 14 to shafts 4, 6 coupled by an intermediate shaft 5. The shaft 4 is in axial splined engagement 9 with the shaft 5, which is in turn in helically splined engagement 10, 11 with the shaft 6. On turning an adjuster sleeve 18 relatively to a nut 15 threaded therein and slidable along dowel pins 27 fast with the shaft 6, the nut is moved axially and, through thrust bearings 16, 17, similarly slides the intermediate shaft 5. The relative axial movement of the helical splines 10, 11 then rotates the shafts 5, 6 with respect to each other. A bolt 26 and wedging collar 25 are tightened to lock the adjuster sleeve 18.
