Abstract

986,861. Universal joints. SCHLOEMANN A.G. Nov. 30, 1962 [Dec. 5, 1961], No. 45328/61. Heading F2U. In a rolling mill coupling wherein a coupling shaft 7, 8, is connected at one end to a roll drive gear spindle 2 by a simple toothed universal joint and is provided at the other end with a similar toothed joint of which the socket is formed by two separable parts 22, 29, one 22 of which has a coned seating in, and facially toothed engagement 31 with the other 29, which is keyed on a roll journal 3 as described in Specification 895,731, the joint parts 22, 29 are axially yieldingly connected, maintaining engagement of the teeth 31, by grooved segments 36 which are slidably carried by either the coupling member 29 or by a spigot 35 on the coupling part 7, and are radially spring-pressed into engagement with grooves on the spigot or coupling member respectively. The axial position of the segments 36 is adjustable by shims 42. The coupling shaft is formed from two parts 7, 8 splined together for relative axial movement, and the facial teeth 31 have chamfered tips to facilitate engagement.
