Abstract

<PICT:1045372/C6-C7/1> A resistance film composed of a mixture of one or more silicon oxides with chromium is formed on a cylindrical glass or ceramic substrate 12, or on one or both faces of a flat substrate, by evaporation so that 42%-50% (by volume) of the film is of chromium and 50%-58% of the film is of silicon oxide. The chromium and the oxide(s) are evaporated simultaneously from tantalum members 28, 30 by heating them to the appropriate temperatures with the pressure in container 22 reduced to a suitable level. The type of silicon oxide deposited on 12 may be controlled by controlling the pressure in 22 or by leaking controlled amounts of air or oxygen into it. The ratio of chromium to oxide is determined by suitable positioning of substrate 12 in accordance with a given formulae. The resistance of the film may be controlled by measuring it during formation and stopping evaporation when the desired value is reached.
