Abstract
1,045,125. Heating liquids by direct contact with steam &c. ALLIS CHALMERS MANUFACTURING CO. April 30, 1965 [May 5, 1964], No. 18309/65. Heading F4K. Hot vapour, e.g. steam is injected by a pipe 29 into an open-ended shroud 20 forming a mixing chamber within a pressure vessel 10 to which liquid to be heated is supplied by a pipe 23 at a position outside the shroud, so that cold liquid is not admitted directly to the mixing chamber. The shroud is surrounded by an opentopped vessel 14 forming annular channels 15, 21 and water is fed downwardly by a ring pipe 26 into the channel 21 and passes upwardly through the shroud 20 to mix with the steam. A deflector 18 at the top of the vessel 14 causes a portion of the rising hot water to be recirculated down the annular space 21. The heated water which is not recirculated passes down the channel 15 to an outlet 35 and non-condensible gases are purged at 37. A small hole 17 at the bottom of the vessel 14 prevents build-up of sediment.
