Abstract
1,045,110. Turning. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. Sept. 20, 1965 [Nov. 3, 1964], No. 40106/65. Headings B3B and B3T. [Also in Division F2] A continuous undercut groove 14, formed in one of two mating surfaces, to accommodate an 0-ring seal has the cross-sectional shape shown in Fig. 3. If the groove is circular the cover 11 in which it is to be made is mounted on a lathe with its flat surface at right-angles to the axis of rotation and a cutting tool 21 having a circular cutting tip 23 and a straight portion 24 is mounted to feed towards the cover 11 at an angle of about 20 degrees to the normal as indicated by the arrow 22. The position of the tool feed of the lathe is adjusted radially until the tool 21 intersects the surface at a point which will result in the correct diameter for the inner lip 18 of the groove and the tool fed in the direction 22 until a groove of the desired depth has been cut. In the case of a rectangular seal the groove may be cut in straight lines by a planer and a 45 degree mitreing cut made at each corner, so that the O-ring does not have a single 90-degree bend.
