Abstract

<PICT:1044965/C6-C7/1> An electrolytic cell, operable in no-gravity conditions, in which gases evolved by the electrolysis process are separated from liquid electrolyte, e.g. water, comprises a casing 2 housing an electrolysis chamber 16 defined by two partitions 18, 20 in the casing and divided by an ion-pervious gas-impervious diaphragm 14 into anode and cathode compartments including anode 10 and cathode 12 respectively, the chamber 16 having electrolyte inlets 26, 28 and one or more openings 30 in a central cylindrical projection 32 of each of the electrode compartments for discharging electrolyte and entrained gas-such as hydrogen or oxygen-in a direction generally tangential of the projection into gas separating chambers 4 or 6. Preferably the casing is cylindrical about an axis aligned with the axes of the projections 32 and the gas withdrawal pipes 46, 48, electrolyte being introduced into the casing via tangential inlets 34 to provide by centrifugal action a swirling annular body of liquid on the inside walls of the chambers 4, 6 surrounding a core of gas formed by centrifugal separation of the electrolyte from the discharge from the electrode chambers. Excess electrolyte is removed from the chambers 4, 6 via outlets 38, 40.
