Abstract
<PICT:1117104/C6-C7/1> An electrolytic cell for electrolysis of alkali metal chlorides comprises an anode and a cathode constituted by two coaxial surfaces of revolution, the cathode surface 1 being outside the anode surface 4 and serving as a support for the flow of a film of mercury 13, and an inlet conduit 11 for admitting mercury to the cell, which inlet communicates with an annular space 12 in a non-radial direction so as to impart a tangential component of speed to the mercury so that it flows over the cathode under the combined effect of gravity and the tangential component of speed. In the embodiment shown the cathode 1 and the anode 3 coated with graphite 4 are of the form of truncated cones. The anode is maintained coaxial with the cathode by means of rods 6 and 9. Electric potential is supplied to the electrodes via the leads 2, 8. Saline solution to be electrolyzed is supplied tangentially to the annular space 17 via the inlet 16 such that the saline solution rises through the cell with a circulatory motion in the same direction as that with which the mercury film descends. The anode may be provided with helicoidal grooves in the direction of flow of the saline solution. Amalgam produced by electrolytic action collects in the annular space 14 from which it is removed to an amalgam decomposer. The saline solution containing the chlorine gas formed collects in annular space 18 from which it passes via outlet 19 to a separator. The cell may be adapted to operate under high pressure Fig. 5 (not shown). Suitable external circuitry, e.g. decomposer, separators, &c., Fig. 6 (not shown) is described in which recirculation of mercury and saline solution between decomposer and separators and the electrolytic cell may be maintained with or without the aid of pumps.
