Abstract

1,044,918. Removal of dust generated in industrial processes. T. A. GARDNER. Oct. 8, 1963 [Aug. 19, 1963], No. 39592/63. Heading F4X. Means for removing dust &c. from a web of paper, foil or plastic produced in an industrial process comprises a primary air nozzle 12 having an elongated orifice directed toward the web surface, the ratio of the orifice width to its spacing from the web being within the range of 0.02 to 1 and 0.15 to 1, means for supplying air under pressure to the nozzle and means for collecting from the vicinity of the web surface a portion of the air discharged from the nozzle at a speed of at least 10,000 f.p.m. and such dust as is dislodged and carried thereby from the surface of the web. In one arrangement, a housing (6) (Figs. 1 to 3, not shown), contains a plenum chamber (8) supplied with air through a duct (10) for discharge through the primary nozzle 12 and a secondary nozzle 14. The jets of air supplied to the moving web 60 extend across the full width of the web, one jet being perpendicular to the surface and the other inclined inwards towards the first on its upstream side, preferably at an angle of 5 to 25 degrees and with an orifice size of between 50 and 100% of the first. An exhaust chamber 36 has one or more ducts (40) extending from it and opens into filter plenum (46) completing a circuit after filtration through a fan (54) which supplies the air to the nozzles. The two air jets cause disturbance of the air on the surface of the web which leads to the dislodging of dust on the web surface and its conveyance within the air to the filter plenum. Instead of the secondary nozzle, the casing wall may be extended to just above the web in the position of this nozzle, and by being curved to lie substantially parallel to the web (Fig. 7, not shown) can still entrap air in the exhaust chamber 36. Alternatively, a brush attached to the wall may lightly brush the web surface, still permitting no air escape from the chamber 36 or a circular brush on the inside of this wall may perform the same function. In another embodiment, the dust on the web surface may be given an electrostatic charge by a plate (98) (Fig. 10, not shown), whilst the action of similarly charged plate (100) and the oppositely charged electrode (102) will cause the repelling of the charged dust from the web into the air stream.
