Abstract
Polymeric materials are made by polymerizing liquid propylene, which may contain up to 4% by weight of a different C1-C8 alpha-olefin, in the absence of other liquids and in the presence of a titanium trichloride catalyst activated with a hydrocarbon aluminium compound, and then, in the absence of propylene, a C1-C8 alpha-olefin is polymerized in the presence of the first-formed polymer and so that the final product contains at least 60% by weight of propylene, hydrogen gas being present at least during the first stage of the process. The product consists of an intimate mixture of crystalline homopolymer of propylene and a block copolymer consisting of a crystalline propylene polymer block and at least one crystalline polyolefine block derived from ethylene, a C4-C8 alpha-olefin or a mixture thereof, the average molecular weight of the mixture being at least 50,000. The examples describe processes in which propylene or a mixture thereof with ethylene is polymerized in a first stage and ethylene or butene-1 is polymerized in a second stage. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 889,659.
