Abstract
1386819 Production of graft polymers of vinyl chloride or ethylene-propylene copolymers SOLVAY ET CIE SA 30 Aug 1972 [7 Sept 1971] 40186/72 Heading C3G Graft polymers of vinyl chloride on a copolymer of ethylene and propylene, which constitutes from 20% to 90% by weight of the graft polymer, are produced by polymerizing the vinyl chloride as an adsorbed phase on particles of said copolymer or terpolymer, the initial vinyl chloride partial pressure being greater than 6 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> and less than the saturated vapour pressure of vinyl chloride at the polymerization temperature and the quantity of monomer present at any stage of the polymerization being such that the initial particulate form of the copolymer or terpolymer is maintained throughout the polymerization. Polyethylene and/or polypropylene may be present in addition to said copolymer which may be a terpolymer, in which the third monomer is preferably a non-conjugated diene. Examples are given in which ethylene-propylene copolymer, ethylene-propylene-ethylidene norbornene-dicyclopentadiene copolymer or ethylene-propylene-dicyclopentadiene copolymer is dispersed in an aqueous medium and grafted with vinyl chloride. Alternatively a latex of trunk ethylene-propylene copolymer is used. Polyethylene or polypropylene is present in some examples and the graft polymers are blended with polyvinyl chloride or chlorinated polyvinyl chloride.
