Abstract

1,044,636. Aerials. COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE THOMSON-HOUSTON. July 10, 1963 [July 10, 1962], No. 27319/63. Heading H4A. From an aerial array comprising orthogonal sets of parallel tubular dipoles electrically interconnected at the crossing points and mounted in front of a flat reflector, different radiation patterns and/or directions of polarization are obtained by selection of the relative phase and amplitudes of the energy fed to the aerial. As described, one set of two parallel full-wave dipoles 1, 3 is mounted orthogonal with another set 2, 4, each set being composed of four halfwave dipoles each connected with, and mounted perpendicular to, a corresponding one of the other set to form a cross. The four crosses so formed are mounted at the corners of a square above a reflector disc R by supports S which contain coaxial supply lines and matching networks and quarter-wave traps P are provided to annul the circulation currents on the supports S. A spherical radome E may enclose the array and a parabolic reflector may be used. Each of the full-wave dipoles is fed at the centre of one of its component half-way dipoles and several combinations of in-phase and antiphase excitation (which may be switched) are described with reference to Figs. 3-7 (not shown) resulting in orthogonally, circularly or elliptically polarized single or double lobed beams.
