Abstract

Liquid compositions having reduced oiliness when taken orally, comprise a glyceride ester of a fatty acid or an ethyl ester of the fatty acid fraction of an unsaturated glyceride oil, and as an emulsifying agent a fatty acid ester of sorbitan or polyethylene glycol wherein the fatty acid moiety has 10 to 22 carbon atoms, the emulsifying agent being present in an amount from 0.5 to 5.0% by weight of the glyceride ester or ethyl ester whereby the composition forms an oil-in-water emulsion when mixed with twice its volume of water. The glyceride ester may be any animal or vegetable glyceride oil, e.g. cod liver oil and maize oil. Other esters disclosed are the monoglyceride of maize oil fatty acids and the ethyl esters of the polyunsaturated fatty acid fraction of cod liver oil. Emulsifiers specified are sorbitan mono-oleate and polyethylene glycol mono-oleate. A flavouring agent such as mint, caramel or saccharin may be included in the composition. Also, the composition may be admixed with milk or fruit juice.ALSO:Liquid medicinal compositions having reduced oiliness when taken orally, comprise a glyceride ester of a fatty acid or an ethyl ester of the fatty acid fraction of an unsaturated glyceride oil, and as an emulsifying agent a fatty acid ester of sorbitan or polyethylene glycol wherein the fatty acid moiety has 10 to 22 carbon atoms, the emulsifying agent being present in an amount from 0.5 to 5.0% by weight of the glyceride ester or ethyl ester whereby the composition forms an oil-in-water emulsion when mixed with twice its volume of water.
