Abstract

[Also in Division G3] In a Kaplan type turbine, the runner blades 3, 4, Fig. 1, are journalled in a rotating casing and are adjusted in response to movements of a control valve 21. A piston 9 has a rod 8 connected to the blades by links 7. A pump 23, driven by an electric motor 25 supplies fluid to the valve 21 and movement of the valve controls the supply and exhaust of the fluid to a chamber 10 below the piston 9, the space on the upper side of the piston being connected to exhaust. When the valve moves upwards, the fluid pressure is fed to the chamber 10 to raise the piston 9 which causes the blades to move in a closing direction until the land 32 on the valve again closes a port in the piston rod. When the valve moves downwards, the chamber 10 is open to exhaust and the hydrodynamic force acting on the blades 3, 4 moves them in an opening direction until the land 32 again closes the port. The valve 21 is actuated by a cable 20, Fig. 2, which is moved by a cam 18 actuated by a fluid motor 17 which adjusts the wicket gate 13 in response to changes in load on the turbine.
