A poultry cage assembly includes a pair of facing rows of cages each cage being provided with an opening 70 through which eggs can pass and each row of cages having a plate 60, 60<SP>1</SP> fixed to the fronts of the cages above the opening 70 wherein each plate 60 includes a guard element 68 projecting downwardly and inwardly into the cages and a bracket part 72, 72<SP>1</SP> projecting diagonally upwardly and outwardly, the parts 72, 72<SP>1</SP> of the two rows supporting a food trough which extends along the space between the rows. The trough is formed with wing portions 54 which engage over the elements 72, 72<SP>1</SP> and has a chain conveyer 50 for moving the food. The eggs roll from the cages on to a conveyer belt and are deposited in a collecting station. A water trough is provided between the rows of cages. Adjacent cages in each row have a common vertical dividing wall and the plates 60 are slotted to provide egg guards 68 straddling the walls.
