Abstract
1,043,421. Bridges; expansion joints. E. LUBBERT, U. FINSTERWALDER, R. JECHT, E. RUF, E. LUBBERT, E. LOFFLER, G. LUCKING. May 31, 1963 [June 1, 1962; March 28, 1963], No. 22005/63. Heading E1G. A prestressed concrete elevated roadway comprising rectangular slab sections 2 cantilevered from central columns 1 and joined lengthwise of the carriageway by freely suspended slabs 3 has resilient tension members 7 rigidly anchored in contiguous sections 2, 3 and bridging the expansion joint 6 and means for distributing the temperature expansion over an appropriately long length of the surface covering 15. The tension members 7 are anchored at each end by rods 13 cast in concrete 12 embedded in the sections 2 and 3, and pass through holes 17 in transverse concrete joints 14 separated by asbestos strips 16 and resting on a bed of sand 18. Thermal expansion in the joint 6, which includes a rolling bearing 5, is thus spread over the overall length of the joints 14, which are individually bonded to the members 7, to a figure below that productive of cracking in the asphalt covering 15. The roadway is constructed from scaffolding comprising a torsionally rigid box girder 19 supported on a roller mounted gantry 21 at one end and by trestles 25 over subsequent columns 1, the box girder 19 having transverse cross bearers 20 enveloping substantially half of the roadway on each side and providing support for shuttering. The roadway is constructed in sections of two cantilever sections 2, 2<SP>1</SP> followed by a suspended section 3, then the box girder and cross bearers are moved forward by hydraulic jacks to permit the construction of subsequent spans.
