Abstract

1,043,291. Welding by pressure. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. Jan. 7, 1964 [Jan. 8, 1963], No. 719/64. Heading B3R. [Also in Division F2] A furnace wall tube has welded thereto a stud comprising a base part welded to the tube and a head part more resistant to scaling than the material of the base part secured to the base part. The base part may be a low alloy steel and the head part may be a high alloy steel welded thereto. Lengths of low chromium alloy steel and lengths of high chromium alloy steel are automatically fed to a welding apparatus which unites lengths end to end by resistance or fusion, butt welding to form studs which are trimmed. The studs are then resistance welded to a tube wall. The length of the base part and head part are such that the junction between the parts is above a critical temperature liable to lead to embrittlement of the junction.
