[Also in Division F2] A rotary tool 16 for forming internal or external threads, has helical threads 35 formed with a plurality of circumferentially spaced rubbing points 24, Fig. 2, and intermediate relief portions 26, the threads being of uniform diameter in a first portion 20 and of varying diameter in a second portion 22. For forming screw threads in a body 10 of plastic, wood or soft metal, a ferrule 14 which may have external ribs 38 or may be knurled externally, is fitted into a hole 12 and the tool 16 is then screwed into the ferrule to deform threads therein. The ferrule may be split longitudinally or helically, Figs. 6-8 (not shown). Tool 16 may be fluted; alternatively a self-tapping screw may be used. In another embodiment, Fig. 9 (not shown), for forming an external thread on cylindrical member 54, a ferrule 52 with internal ribs 58 or knurls is fitted over member 54 and threaded by a die 50 having a tapering portion 62 and uniform diameter portion 60. Alternatively a nut may be used.
