Abstract

1,175,156. Screw sockets. ROSAN ENG. CORP. 14 March, 1967 [15 March, 1966], No. 11985/67. Heading F2H. [Also in Division B3] An insert having an integral expandable head for locking the same into a bore in a workpiece 23 comprises a cylindrical body 15 having an axially threaded bore 19 and a counterbore 18, external threads 20 on the body, which are of uniform crest and root diameters and have uniform pitch and thread form, locking means on the exterior of the body opposite the counterbore and internal driving means in the body for threading it into the workpiece. The insert is made by reducing the diameter of one end of the blank and then straight roll-knurling the reduced part, the final diameter over the tips of the knurl being equal to its original diameter. The body is then tapped and counterbored, and an hexagonal hole 25 is broached through the threads to receive a driving tool. The external thread 20 is ground along the full length of the insert, so that where it is interrupted by the knurling, pointed teeth are formed. After the insert has been screwed into the workpiece the wall surrounding the counterbore is expanded radially so that the pointed teeth are embedded in the workpiece. In a modification the hexagonal hole 25 is omitted and instead the counterbore is deepened at a smaller diameter and then serrated teeth 38 are formed in the smaller diameter part of the counterbore. The diameter over the tips of the serrated teeth is equal to the diameter of the upper part of the counterbore. Fig. 14 shows an insert of the modified type which has been expanded to grip the workpiece.
