Abstract

1,043,208. Ignition systems. C. BOWDEN. Sept. 24, 1963 [Oct. 1, 1962], No. 37049/62. Heading F1B. In a transistor oscillator ignition system for internal-combustion engines the existing ignition coil primary winding forms part of a tuned circuit providing the base drive current for a power transistor or transistors 1, 2, the remainder of the tuned circuit comprising the secondary winding L 3 of an auxiliary transformer together with a series capacitor 4 of such value that the whole of the tuned circuit is resonant at a frequency equal or closely equal to the critical frequency of the ignition coil secondary and its associated capacitance and the primary or energizing windings L 1 , L 2 or winding of the auxiliary transformer are or is the collector loads or load of the power transistors or power transistor the time constants of such primary windings or winding being such that optimum performance is achieved at the critical frequency of the ignition coil secondary. The duration of oscillator action may be adjustable by means of a variable resistor in series with a fixed resistor capacitor circuit.
