Abstract

1, 042, 989. Filter-washing system. A. S. HALLAMORE. Aug. 4, 1964 [Sept. 25, 1963], No. 31101/64. Heading B1T. An air filtering unit 13, comprising three fibrous filters 34-36 (Fig. 3, not shown), is washed by successive washes of detergent and water from sprays 51, 52, 53 on a header tube 50, which moves along horizontal guide channels 55, 57. Motor 70 drives two horizontal endless chains 74, 83 which carry projecting fingers (Fig. 4 not shown), engaging and vertically slidable in channels on tube 50, whereby the movement of tube 50 is reversed as the fingers go round end sprockets (e.g. 76, 82). The washing arrangement is on the downstream side of the filters, and liquid drains into a channel along the bottom of each filter and thence to a trough 25. In use, (Fig. 1, not shown), unit 13 is located between a coarse metal screen filter (12) and an electrostatic precipitator (15). The washing cycle is controlled by a timer which cuts the main air fans and electrostatic precipitator and then actuates motor 70 and solenoid valves supplying detergent and water in desired sequence. The cycle is initiated either at definite intervals or manually or automatically in response to a certain pressure drop across unit 13 (Figs. 5, 6 now shown). "Fibrous filters" may be batts of rubber hydrochloride or polyethylene mounted between supporting screens, or one or more layers of woven plastics strands.
