Abstract

A device for preventing a vehicle from skidcomprises a spindle 25 rotatable and axially movable parallel to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle in a housing 26, worm or skew gears 27 for rotating the spindle 25 at a speed proportional to that of the road wheels, a flywheel 36 rotatable and axially movable on the spindle and coupled thereto by a slipping clutch 37 which, under circumstances mentioned below, acts to limit deceleration of the flywheel in accordance with the deceleration of the vehicle and axially acting springs 39 which normally hold the clutch engaged. When the vehicle is travelling normally the parts are arranged as shown in Fig. 1 where a spigot 32 on the right-hand end of the spindle closes a passage 35 leading to a servo. As speed increases shoes 38 on the springs 39 are centrifuged outwards to engage the inside of the flywheel 36 and the springs 39 retract a sleeve 41 from the left-hand end of the housing 26; the spindle 25 is now free to move to the left but it does not do so because the forces on it are balanced so that the passage 35 is not uncovered. If a road wheel is now rapidly decelerated, the reaction between the worm and worm-wheel at 28 tends to move the spindle to the left, but as long as the vehicle decelerates correspondingly, inertia forces on the spindle and flywheel will prevent the passage 35 from being uncovered. If, due to skid, the vehicle does not decelerate the passage 35 will be uncovered and air will be admitted to a servo which reduces the braking effort applied to the road wheels.
