Abstract
1,267,220. Controlling wheel-spin. DAIMLER-BENZ A.G. 31 Oct., 1969 [2 Nov., 1968], No. 53496/69. Heading B7H. Spinning of the driven wheels of a motor vehicle is controlled by means which detect a difference in the speed of rotation of the driven and non-driven wheels and vary the driving torque applied to the driven wheels accordingly. Associated with each driven wheel 3, 4 and non- driven wheel 1, 2 is an electric generator 5, 6, 7, 8 which produces a voltage proportional to the wheel speed. The generators 5, 7 and 6, 8 on each side of the vehicle are connected to a differential amplifier 9, 10, the generators 7, 8 through voltage dividers 11, 12 which reduce the voltage therefrom sufficiently to permit a maximum wheel-spin of 15%. When the wheelspin exceeds this value the respective amplifier 9, 10 produces a signal which causes braking of the slipping wheel or a reduction of engine torque. As shown, both amplifiers 9, 10 are connected to a combination element 21 which transmits a signal to actuating means 16 for interrupting the engine ignition or reducing the fuel supply only when receiving input signals from both amplifiers, and each amplifier 9, 10 is also connected to a respective combination element 22 connected to actuating means 17, 18 for a valve 19 which connects a pressure source to a brake 20, the elements 22 being blocked when there is an output signal from the element 21 so that slipping of one wheel causes application of the appropriate brake and slipping of both wheels causes a reduction in the engine torque but no braking. To avoid repeated brake applications it may be arranged that once a brake has been applied it is not released until the wheel-spin has been reduced to a predetermined low limit value of 5%. Communication between the brakes and a pedal-actuated master cylinder providing for normal brake control is cut-off when the brakes are applied to prevent wheel-spin. During normal applications of the brakes by means of the pedal, braking in response to wheel-spin is automatically prevented.
