[Also in Division H3] An automatic system for controlling the temperature of a medium comprises a bridge of two thyristors and two diodes in series with the heating element and the A.C. supply, the other bridge diagonal being short-circuited. The thyristor gates are normally energized from the A.C. supply via diodes MR3, MR4 and resistors R1, R2, but when the temperature of the medium reaches its upper limit the contacts CT of a mercury thermometer close and short-circuit the thyristor gates to the bridge diagonal, thus turning off the thyristors at the next zero point in the A.C. cycle.
