Abstract

In the production of spun yarn, a doubled sliver of natural e.g. cotton, and/or synthetic fibres is drafted into a web which is gathered into a fibre layer and a fluid bonding agent is introduced thereinto; surplus agent is removed, the layer is condensed, as by calender rollers, into a smooth, compact sliver which is dried and then "accumulated" by coiling into containers or winding; the bond between individual fibres is mechanically broken by drafting in a single-zone drawing mechanism (without preliminary draft) and the sliver is twisted into yarn. The bonding agent may be a solution of corn, rice or potato starch and/or polyvinylalcohol and may contain colouring matter, wetting or waterproofing agent, fungicide and/or bactericide.
