Abstract

1,042,289. Hinges. C. R. HAMMERSTEIN. March 1, 1963, No. 23173/66. Heading E2F. A hinge for the adjustable backrest of a seat comprises a pair of hinge plates 11, 12 mounted on a common spindle 20 and means for locking the hinge in a desired position of adjustment, the means including a plurality of balls 13 enclosed within a restricted space and adapted to be displaced by a plunger 18 into engagement with recesses 17 formed in at least one of the plates. The recesses may be formed in a flange 16 bent over from one of the plates (as shown) or in the side surfaces of one or both plates, and the balls are contained in a case having side walls 14, 15 integral with one of the plates. The plunger 18 is moved by a cam 19 on the spindle 20, and if desired two ball cases may be arranged on opposite sides of the spindle. A spring 25 urges the backrest towards the upright position.
