Abstract

1,041,830. Baling presses. PORTABLE BALERS Ltd. Dec. 17, 1964 [Dec. 19, 1963], No. 50228/63. Heading B5F. Apparatus for baling waste paper &c. comprises an open-topped container 10, a platen 14 which is displaceable upwardly to compress the material against a closure member 13, a door 11 for opening and closing the upper part of the container, and means for locating lengths 28 of binding material as shown in Fig. 1 prior to bailing. The door 11 and lid 13 are held closed by gravity catches 12 and locking lever 131 respectively. In operation, with the platen 14 in the position seen in Fig. 1, the cords 28 are engaged under spring clips 142 and looped ends 281 passed through notches in the front of the platen 14. The platen is moved down to its lowest position (seen in chain lines in Fig. 4, not shown) and the door 11 closed. The platen 14 may be moved manually or by hydraulic or electric means. As shown, a ratchet crank handle 22 can be connected to either of two drive shafts 21 or 25, one for fast movement (downward) and the other for slow movement (upwards for compression). The shafts 21, 25 are connected through bevel gearing to threaded rods 16 engaging screw blocks 15 provided on the platen 14. The cords 28 may be drawn from reels 282 (Fig. 7, not shown).
