In apparatus for making electrical leads a wire 46 is fed through an aperture 16 in a plunger 14 so that it overlies the ferrule 62 of a connector, which has been advanced over an anvil 20 by the left-hand finger 38. A ram 1 is driven to cause a die 5 to crimp the ferrule to the wire 46 and simultaneously a shear plate 2 descends to shear the connector from the lefthand connector strip 59. The plunger 14 enters a space between the anvil 20 and a plate 21 thereby preventing shearing of wire 46 (Fig. 2, not shown). The ram 1 is returned, the righthand finger 38 advances the right-hand connector strip 59 and the crimped connector is lifted by the die 5. The wire 46 is then advanced by a predetermined length. The advance of the feed finger moves a plate 24 into the space between the anvil 20 and plate 21 (Fig. 3, not shown) and a deflector plate 29 pushes the wire clear of the shear plate 2. The ram performs a second working stroke, the shear face 10 of a plate 9 shearing the connector from the strip 59, the die 5 crimping the ferrule 62 and, since the plunger 14 abuts the plate 24, a frame 12 moves relative to the plunger and the wire 46 is sheared between an edge 13 of the frame 12 and the edge of the aperture 16.
