Bed frames are made from structural elements as shown in Fig. 3 of extruded or rolled aluminium or an alloy thereof or a thermoplastic synthetic resin, which may have two grooves 6 one in each side wall 2 and 3. The elements are joined together by inserting die-cast plugs 12 into abutting compartments 5 and the legs 15 are attached by passing the headpieces 18 of bolts 16 into compartments 5 so that the shanks 17 extend through the undercut portion and engage lugs 19 of the legs 15. The springing of the bed frames is provided, by rubber webs secured to the frame by inserting hooks, which are attached to the webs, into groove 6, or by linked or chain type springing with hooks engaging the groove 6. An adjustable bed is formed (Fig. 4) by attaching the legs 23 to the bed frame 26 using bell crank levers 25 which are pivotally mounted on the upper ends of each leg 23 and carry stirrups 30 having a T-piece slidably engaged in the lower compartment 5 of the associated rail length 27. When the bed is raised to the dot-andpick position the upwardly extending edges of the levers 25 are seated in the groove 6. The bed may be locked in intermediate positions by a screw bolt carried by each stirrup 30. Attachments can be secured to the bed frame for supporting plasma bottles and other surgical or medicinal equipment. These attachments are illustrated in Figs. 6, 7 and 8 (not shown) as substantially V- shaped members with flanges engaging groove 6 and slot 8. Fracture boards may be slung between the sides of a bed by hooks engaging in grooves 6 and when using structural elements with two grooves 6 bracing legs may be attached to the inwardly directed groove 6.
