A building panel comprises facing sheets of reinforced synthetic resin separated by a core structure comprising preformed core elements in the form of sheets shaped to have only spacedapart areas of each face in contact with the adjacent facing sheet to which they are bonded by the resin of the facing sheet, and including strengthening ribs bonded to the facing sheets throughout the length of each rib. The facing sheets may be of polyester or epoxy resin reinforced with glass fibres, hessian, expanded metal, gravel, shingle, broken sea shells or rice husks and a fine powder filler having a calcium base may also be included, the reinforcement being chosen to impart wear-resistant, fire-retardant or weather resistant properties. The sheets are built up in a mould in an appropriate sequence of resin, reinforcement and fillers. The core may be of papier mache sheets formed as conventional egg trays stiffened in parts with glue, size, polyvinyl chloride or polyester or epoxy resins, the central portion being left unimpregnated to preserve acoustic properties. These core sheets are laid in the mould on the uncured facing sheets and strengthening ribs are laid between them to form a rectangular grid; the second mould half with laid-up assembly of facing sheets is then placed over the core and the whole allowed to cure. The ribs may be preformed bars of synthetic resin reinforced with any of the materials used for the facing sheets. After removal from the mould the panel may be sealed around the edges with a cone or skirting.
